Summary/Abstract: Contemporary literary theory makes use of a number of terms which, in a very complex way, reflect an attempt to define the stylistic profile and the historic position of individual literary periods or trends. Renaissance, baroque, classicism, romanticism, realism, naturalism etc. -- these are calegories without which literary history can hardly be conceived. A certain number of these terms are traditional while others have become familiar only in recent decades - in both cases reflecting the prevailing tendencies in individual national literatures, that is philologies. Hardly any of them, bowever, has not in the course of time changed its meaning or is not subject to theoretical revision even today. This relative instability is attributable to various factors.
