Multiculturalism and Liberal Democracy

Summary/Abstract: This essay points out the idea that discourses and practice of multiculturalism outside the framework of liberal democracy are impracticable. Analysing the two main sources of the ideology of diversity – the success of the theoretical field of cultural studies and the reorientation of the ideology of socialism – we argue that, in many cases, the discourse of multiculturalism unfolds itself as a political exploitation of the empirical state of multiculturality. Beyond theory, multicultural arrangements – compatible with a revised version of liberal democracy – are called to take the tests of efficiency and adequacy in particular societal contexts.
