Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to explore the basic functions of specific Lithuanian pastoral. The article also reveals the pastoral as a symptom (complex pastoral) and universal phenomenon (pastoral of sentiment) of national culture. The germ of individual Lithuanian pastoral can be seen in 19th – 20th century’s literary texts written by Donelaitis, Baranauskas and Maironis. The sentimental version of pastoral (pastoral of sentiment) is dominant in this period’s Lithuanian literature. The interface of 20th – 21st centuries marks significant changes in Lithuanian literature. The version of complex pastoral displays unique and unexpected forms of changing national identity today. It is important that both versions of pastoral arise in interaction with alien cultures (Soviet Union and European Union cultures) that are experienced as repressive. The retreat discourse unifies both versions of pastoral while creating safe and protecting places for all Lithuanian nations. Such a narrative strategy is typical for all postcolonial literature. The complex version of pastoral (pastoral of mind) as symptomatic element of traditional Lithuanian culture became dominant in 21st century’s literature. It represents the beginning of significant changes in contemporary literature and national culture overall.
