Summary/Abstract: Durs Grünbein’s triptych “Am Baltischen Meer“, dedicated to Lithuanian writer Tomas Venclova, is analyzed in the context of current debates about the interaction between literature and memory. The work reveals theorist Renate Lachmann’s principle of intertextuality as „literary memory“, i. e. text connection with the cultural pre-texts. Creating links to historical events and people, the author employs esthetic means to reflect the history of the twentieth century: totalitarianism, emigration, destruction of cultural identity and memory. The poem is characterized by the abundance of perspectives and meanings, where the cultural pre-texts are not only adapted, but also transformed. The intersections of text/pre-text and author/reader dimensions, which are highlighted by Julija Kristeva, open up new meanings: different categories of time and space overlap in the poem; various historical layers are unveiled and further complemented with the personal experiences. Durs Grünbein intends to revive the long forgotten Baltic region and its multicultural identity in the consciousness of a German reader. This poem is a unique dialogue „place“ for the two writers: Durs Grünbein and Tomas Venclova. It argues against the deformation of history and asserts the importance of memory and cosmopolitanism. Both authors considering the poetry to be a „medicine against amnesia“, emphasize the role of literature in analyzing the processes of memory and history.
