Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this study is to determine fundamental variables that constitute the psychosocial climate of maternity hospitals and observe their effects on maternal emotional state. Content analysis of 189 stories on child delivery and 44 semi-structured interviews with women after having delivered a baby reveals 4 main aspects that contribute to the formation of maternity hospital climate: relationships, values, systems and eco-architecture. The strongest influence on the climate was associated with relational aspects (empathy, support, and willingness to help), and symmetric or asymmetric attitudes of caregivers to a woman in labour (i.e. communication styles, mothers’ participation in decision making, providing relevant information). The outcomes suggest specific protective and/or stress factors on emotional well-being of mothers.
