Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the views of two great philosophers, Georg W. Leibniz and Arthur Schopenhauer. In his optimistic system, Leibniz perceived the world as created by God. Schopenhauer, in his pessimism, claimed that God does not exist and that the world is ruled by the irrational Will. Surprisingly, the opposing views of Leibniz and Schopenhauer converge in the area of ethics, for both of them consider good action and compassion toward each other the most important things. The author claims that the convergence of their moral standpoints can be explained by their common discovery the metaphysical mystery of being.
