Summary/Abstract: According to our knowledge there has been limited research conducted in Romania with respect to tourism entrepreneurship. Due to the fact that entrepreneurship can be considered an engine for economic progress and that tourism is an economic activity that efficiently creates jobs in regions lacking important development opportunities, we undertook an exploratory investigation of entrepreneurs from Straja mountain resort. Our research concentrated on identification of the socio-economic background of tourism entrepreneurs, the factors underlying their decision to become an entrepreneur, in general, and that to become an entrepreneur in tourism, in particular. Also, the paper investigates the influence of entrepreneurs’ socio-demographic characteristics on the motivations to become an entrepreneur and respectively, to invest in tourism.
