Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the issues related to separatist tendencies of ethno-religious provenance in Southern Thailand. The author refers to Southern Thailand (in particular to ‘border provinces’ near Malaysia, also referred to by its historical name, Pattani) as to a good example of the difficult relations between the local population and the central government and also the area where the emergent Thai nationalism stood against the cultural, religious and ethnic aspirations of the local population, for a long time demonstrating independence from the Thai, Buddhist North and showing strong cultural ties with the peoples on the neighbouring Malaysia, especially with regard to language, religion and a similar historical heritage.
