Summary/Abstract: The difference in the status of archival institutions is reflected to a great extent in the financing, and it is evident that the archives with the status of administrative organizations have a more stable, better and more regular funding. On the other hand, according to getting new employees, higher takeover of archival material from the registry, purchase of archival equipment and overall professional work, one gets the impression that archives with the status of cultural institutions, in terms of their activity, are a somewhat better position. Theoretically, and in experience, both status positions of archives have certain advantages and disadvantages: 1. Archives with the status of the administration have a greater ability to ensure effective protection of current records (because of its inspection responsibilities), while they have limited opportunities for planning and working on cultural and educational activities, as well as those of scientific and editorial nature. 2. The archives, however, with the status of public institutions in culture have a greater ability to plan and carry out some broader tasks: cultural-educational, research and editorial nature, and because of its more advisory role than command positions are limited to their successful achievements in the field of protection of current records.
