Summary/Abstract: We conclude that archival legislation in Bosnia and Herzegovina is quite conservative, anachronistic, unsynchronized and non-aligned, which significantly affects the status and accomplishments in the archives of Bosnia and Herzegovina. All this has huge implications for the archival profession, which has lagged behind in relation to its neighbours in many segments. It is therefore necessary as soon as possible to stop with etatization of archival activities. It is necessary to provide a place and space for archival knowledge and skills and respect archival principles because that is the only way to change the situation for the better. Political cadre does not have a place in the profession, and it is necessary for professional and creative staff to take the helm of archival profession and to implement high-skilled knowledge in archival legislation. Therefore, this situation in the archival profession shall require a quick and comprehensive response not only by the profession, but by all those who can help in any way to get rid of etatization that would make archival institutions more functional and professional technical institutions, ready to respond to all demands of profession, to successfully follow the dynamic development of archival science while respecting the established archival principles and standards. On that front, it is necessary that legislation is made according to archival standards and principles, compatibile with achival legislation of archival services of the developed world. Professional legislation is needed, one which will implement archival knowledge, and not politics. Only legislation based on the basic archival principles can assure development and progress of the archival profession, and guarantee the creation of healthy and functional archival institutions. We hope that we as a guild, a profession, are aware of our status and responsibilities and that we should do everything to make politics lesser, and the knowledge, expertise and skills dominant force in the archives of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
