Huno Rätsep in language planning

Summary/Abstract: In addition to research on diachronic morphology and lexicology in Estonian and verbal syntax in contemporary Estonian, academic Huno Rätsep has also made a large contribution to Estonian language planning. This article surveys his work in the second half of the 1970s and the fi rst half of the 1980s. During this period he published many articles on language planning, in which he examined the relative importance of the dictionary of correct usage, language rules and changing them, the democratisation of written language, the relation between language planning and teaching of the mother tongue, the problem of morphological parallel forms, enrichment of the vocabulary of contemporary Estonian, and more. During these years, he led the Commission on Language Planning and Language Teaching and the work of the 3rd National Commission of Correct Usage. In the years 1979-1983, important decisions were made by the VÕK (National Commission of Correct Usage) to make changes in morphology, orthography and name planning.
