Summary/Abstract: Contemporary historiography has actively engaged the subject of the influence of Russian imperial authorities on the religious and national identity of the Jewish population. As is clear from the most recent works, in spite of vacillation, disruption, and failure, the authorities’ orientation toward inclusion of particular segments of the Jewish population in the estate (soslovie) structure of Russian society – “selective integration” in the terminology of Benjamin Nathans – represented the most well-considered approach to the resolution of the Jewish problem.
