The relevance of fair value measurement
in small and medium enterprises

Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses on fair value as an obligatory or optional measurement category of some balance sheet items according to the draft IFRS for Small and Medium-sized Entities. The specificity of the nature of fair value makes the measurement very costly and time-consuming. However, small and medium enterprises possess limited financial and human resources. Furthermore the usefulness of fair value of assets and liabilities in small or medium entity is not the same as in a bigger one because of the smaller group of financial statements readers. Another important problem is the reliability of fair value, providing which makes it necessary to carry out external audit. In this context arises the question about the relevance of fair value measurement in small and medium enterprises. In order to find the answer the first part of the paper presents which balance sheet items must or may be measured at fair value according to the draft standard. The second part of the paper focuses on the characteristics of fair value as a measurement category. The third part identifies the specific attributes of small and medium entities which make the use of fair value in those entities unfounded.
