Summary/Abstract: In 1939–1940 the Lithuanian Armed Forces saw Germany as its major enemy and were working on improving the plan of operations known as Plan “V” (Lith. Vokietija); however, at the same time they doubted, and not without reason, about the peacefulness and sincerity of their military ally, the USSR. Even though the garrisons of the Red Army were deployed on the territory of Lithuania under the 1939 Mutual Assistance Treaty imposed by the USSR, the Lithuanian Armed Forces had Plan “R” for reacting to unexpected aggressive actions undertaken by the USSR against Lithuania. In June 1940, before the Soviet occupation, documents related to the USSR were destroyed in the Lithuanian Armed Forces on a mass scale; therefore, Plan “R” itself has not yet been found; nevertheless, its existence is confirmed by other documents.
