Summary/Abstract: a systematic survey is given of the philosophic views of jaan kaplinski. although kaplinski’s thinking is fuzzy and interdisciplinary, it is not without coherence. His philosophy is founded on scepticism excluding the possibility that any theory could be entirely adequate to reality. according to kaplinski, consistent thinking invariably leads to a paradox. In the article kaplinski’s scepticism is demonstrated on metaphilosophical, cognitive philosophical, language philosophical and ontological levels, pointing out inter-level relations. His most original philosophical contribution is seen in the delineation of the possible principles for a Finno-ugrian language philosophy. kaplinski is convinced that any thinking process starts from certain premises, which is faith in something. kaplinski is not an advocate of radical scepticism or solipsism. the basic intuitions of kaplinski’s thinking are the belonging of one’s ego to the indefinable whole and respect for life. It is investigated how those two intuitions combine to bind together thinking, faith and tradition. It is concluded that the pivot of kaplinski’s philosophy is ethics.
