Summary/Abstract: The analysis of linguistic-cultural material representative for standard and rural Polish as well as for the fire brigade socio-dialect led to significant differentiation of reconstructed pictures of po¿ar (fire), which is a consequence of acquisition of a culturally determined attitude by the subject, depending on the knowledge and developing a certain interpretative perspective. In rural culture adopting common-sensical attitude, fire is taken as a living creature. Parallel to that, fire is considered a sign of sacrum. This conceptualization of pożar remains in accordance with the practices of wypraszanie/wyprowadzanie po¿aru (throwing away/dismissing fire), or closing it in a magic circle. Firemen's language is the technical one, pursuing for rational perception of reality, the scholarly way of looking at things. Pożar in the firemen's eyes is estimated in the categories of its real reasons and practical ways to eliminate it. In contemporary standard Polish, the "naïve" (typical of folklore) and scholarly perspective (present in the specialist jargon) interpenetrate.
