Summary/Abstract: The paper studies the extent to what an event that was perceived as extraordinary by the Romanian people - the public announcement of Romania to adhere NATO - could induce flashbulb memory. The relationships between the emotional impact of the event and the emotional, cognitive and contextual variables related to the recalling or evaluating the event are also analysed. The event taken into account did not lead to the formation of consistent, long-lasting memories (flashbulb memories), even if it was evaluated as positive by the investigated Romanian subjects. Variables as surprise, interest in political life, or age are related to the formation of detailed memories. In such a context, the emotional impact of the event is mainly related to the evaluation of the character of the news (common or very unusual). This variable is almost 3 times more important than other two significant variables in their relationship with the evaluation of the emotional impact - the personal importance and the importance for the country.
