Summary/Abstract: The qualitative study of cognitive functioning of children with special education needs was carried out as a diploma thesis at the department of psychology (FF UK) between September 2010 and June 2011. The supervisor of the thesis was Lenka Krejcova, Ph.D. and the project was supported by DYS-centrum Praha. We systematically observed six children of school age who were treated via Reuven Feuerstein’s Instrumental Enrichment programme. The attention was paid to changes in cognitive functioning, particularly speech and language, independent work, and the ability to process information efficiently. Despite the fact that current counselling and educational system does not allow us to use the programme up to the extent suggested by its authors, even limited application of the programme showed positive changes in all observed areas.
