Summary/Abstract: The paper addressed issue of regional convergence of Slovak NUTS II regions in the context of the enlargement and sustainable regional development. The concept of multidimensional sustainability based on capital theory, consisting of production, human, social and natural capital is introduced as major methodo-logical approach. Based on this, Slovak NUTS II regions were compared using selected indica-tors of four above mentioned types of capital. Results demonstrates that regional disparities measured as multidimensional variables can be considered as vital contribution to real convergence among EU regions and that the principle of sustainable development has potential significantly influence transformation to the knowledge based society and the formation of adequate partnerships in the regions.
