THE PICTURE OF NATIONAL CULTURE AS VIEWED BY A HISTORIAN

Summary/Abstract: The article is an elaborate analysis of professor Maria Bogucka’s work, which is a unique attempt to draw an outline of the history of Polish culture with a particular emphasis on mentality aspect and the role of culture in the life of the nation in the long term process of duration from the origins of Polish history until the year 1989. A long time before, the author made an outline finishing in the year 1918. This time, however, she also included the most crucial cultural issues of the 2nd Polish Republic, the war 1939–1945, as well as all the communist governments in Poland. The reviewer emphasizes advantages of the analysis, combining in the process of inevitable selection, significant social-economic and custom-related plots, everyday culture, including the so-called high culture, artistic and scientific creative work, arts, education etc. The analysis is solidly based on facts, and the picture of the latest history is free from unilateral, black and white approaches, typical of partial approaches to the subject.
