Summary/Abstract: The recent years have resulted in lingering discussions in the USA concerning the danger of terrorism and the necessary actions to preserve safety of the state and citizens. The authors of numerous works come back to the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington on 11 September 2001 (the Americans refer to this traumatic event as “9/11”)th , analyzing their circumstances. They criticize both safety politics of the USA and George W. Bush’s ‘war against terrorism’, particularly the raid on Iraq. This critical approach is shared by Al Gore’s book, criticizing Bush’s administration, especially military actions in Iraq. A lot of attention is also devoted to ‘the politics of fear’ and manipulations of media by the republicans in the realization of ‘war against terrorism’. He condemns breaking of the Constitution by the government, extending executive power and building ‘imperial presidency’. Anxiously he mentions the diminishing by president Bush legislation and juridical power and reduction of constitutional rights. He sees it as a threat to freedom and civil rights in the country which incorporates democracy, freedom and inspires followers. The Assault on Reason is an interesting and important work which may encourage deep reflection on contemporary America and its politics, role and position in the world.
