Summary/Abstract: In the article, I argue against K. Popper’s view that Plato’s Republic is a model of totalitarian society. The main contradiction between them is the answer to the question „Who should rule?“. Here I present two models of governance of society – Popper’s „open society“ and Plato’s ideal of a society governed by the „philosopher king“. The critical argument is built on the thesis that, in contemporary Bulgarian society, the institutions are not working instruments of democratic governance. In fact, Plato’s reflections on the origin of democracy present a realistic picture of developments in Bulgarian society in the beginning of the 21st century.
