Summary/Abstract: In the present study two word-reading tests in Estonian and Finnish are compared. The word- list reading test assesses decoding speed and accuracy. The word-recognition test assesses fluency and accuracy of word recognition in the reading process. The study had two aims. The first was to evaluate the comparability of the reading tests in Estonian and Finnish. The second aim was to contribute an appropriate method for comparing word reading tests. The comparative analysis of the two tests involved multiple methods: linguistic analysis, analyses of adult readers’ and children’s test performances and children’s interviews. The results point mainly to similarities but also to some differences between the Estonian and Finnish tests.
