Summary/Abstract: The idea of this research was provoked by the variety of modern city life and especially by the attitude of the city inhabitants to the social environment. The diversity of Sofia’s quarters raises a number of questions connected to the mentality of their inhabitants, to the level of adaptability to the surrounding area and to the influence of the tradition. A possible answer to these problems can be found in the peculiarities of the local (quarter) identity. It is the life of an old Sofia’s quarter – Reduta – that serves as an empirical basis of the research. The inhabitants of the quarter form the specific community with links and attitudes based on the memory and the contemporary existence as well. The autobiographical method is prevailing the research. It makes it possible for ordinary people to be pushed into the focus. The local identity is characterized by specific relationships, by specific preference to a definite area which is recognized faultlessly only by the bearers of this culture. Being in the field of Urban Ethnology this local culture has the dimensions of quarter identity. The latter term expresses more precisely the meaning and the characteristics of this local culture.
