Summary/Abstract: Fossil carbon and coal in particular is sedimentary rock of vegetal origin. Coal contains 65–97% of carbon, 26% of hydrogen, 1.5–15% of oxygen, some sulfur and nitrogen. Coal is used as fuel after enhancement by coking or gasification. The paper discusses contemporary use of coal as a chemical substance and energy carrier.
