Summary/Abstract: Meta-Reflection on the History of Slovak Sociology 20 Years after. This paper builds on a former study that the author wrote 20 years ago. In that study (1988) she suggested that the unsatisfactory state of sociology in Slovakia cannot be explained by referring to its youth. She identified two moments, which disrupted the continuity of its development after 1945. The first, “existential discontinuity“ occurred in 1948 - 1949 and the second one, “sterilization“, was caused by the “normalization“ of the 1970s. The main argument of the present study is that the state of the discipline – the quality of both outcomes and actors – remains affected by the conditions of its birth and by the subsequent path of its development. The state of Slovak sociology is unsatisfying despite the existence of institutional requirements, such as a journal registered in the Current Contents database, an accredited department at the university, research institutes, an openness to the world and positive institutional changes because the legacy of the political “normalization” still matters.
