Summary/Abstract: Modality as a Temporal Perspective Effect. This article deals with some special uses of tenses in French, whose referential interpretation in discourse is quite different from their basic virtual meaning. French grammars call theese “modal uses of tenses”: imparfait d’imminence manquée, imparfait ludique et hypocoristique, futur d’hypothèse, de rétrospection et d’atténuation, etc. The author tries to reconsider these questions by means of cognitive grammar concepts in order to determine the relations between modality and perspective.
