The Hoplite Phalanx – Formation and Development

Summary/Abstract: All aspects of the martial formation Phalanx were studied, based on the abundant sources and historiography materials: the origin of the term itself, the origin of the phalanx and its specifics in time and with the different peoples, the requirements towards the soldiers depending on the characteristics of the formation, the development of the phalanx as a result of the socio-economical changes in the archaic society in VIII–VII BC, the advancement in the strategy and the tactics of the formation.
