Summary/Abstract: The procedure of initiation of a court martial is named “convocation”. A commander authorized to convene a court martial is a “convening authority”. The Uniform Code of Military Justice appoints the commanders which convene a court martial. The authority to convene a court martial is independent of the ranks and is maintained as long as the convening authority remains as a commander in an assigned position.
