Summary/Abstract: The article’s main goal is the presentation of the discourse analysis perspective’s possible applications in research on the visual dimension of mass communication. The author examines the visual discourse of “Gazeta Wyborcza”, the leading Polish daily broadsheet. Specifically, she focuses on the front page photographs representing Pope John Paul II’s pilgrimages. In the analysis the author relies on an interdisciplinary tool proposed by Gillian Rose who suggested researching visual culture from the three perspectives: the site of production, the site of the image and the site of the audience. In the article the author concentrates on the site of production (internal and external context of messages) and the site of image (content and visual grammar of messages).
