On the Possibility and Limits of Theories of Epistemologies Based on Theories of Cognition

Summary/Abstract: Contemporary attempts at the development of a cognitive science of science claim that traditional epistemology as a philosophical and a priori discipline should be replaced by the empirical sub-disciplines of cognitive science. The paper shows that such approaches result in a paradox. It is argued that the paradox can be resolved only by the systematic elaboration of the program of a reflexive cognitive science whose central thesis is that of “interdisciplinary reflexivity”.
