Summary/Abstract: The Nobel Prize winner, Noblistka Elfriede Jelinek in a buttonhole A storm over the one million dollar prize Jelinek’s pigeonholed writing ‘A scandalous and fascist feminist’, ‘a pornographer’ and ‘a traitor to her own nation’. These were just some of the accusations which were hurled against Elfriede Jelinek until recently. But when in 2004 the Austrian writer received the Nobel Prize for Literature all these earlier insults were replaced with praise and compliments. The Austrian sports organisations, for example, who had formerly been against Jalinek for her insightful analysis of sport as a “variation of war during peace” (Ein Sportstück), today officially applaud the author. Austria has proudly pinned their ‘favourite’ Nobel Prize winner into its buttonhole, despite the fact that not so long ago the domestic media continuously criticised her for the way with which she dealt with the issues of war, pornography and the abuse of power in male and female relationships. But this ‘brand new’ approval does have its limits. The million dollars that Jelinek received have lead to a fiery discussion as to what a person known for her socialist views should do with all this money. Only time will show what the writer will do with this impressive prize. For now, one thing is certain: Elfriede Jelinek’s writing has definitely been pigeonholed.
