Summary/Abstract: Within a short time this is the third occasion on which we take up the problem of the systematic demolition of the old Jewish quarters of Pest, a process that is obliterating traces of the material remains of Jews’ one-time presence. Quite apart from its Jewish connections, such a quarter ought to be preserved in a country that considers itself civilized, since there are currently few extensive and centrally located building complexes of the 18th and 19th century that still exist in Hungary. The whole of Europe provides (especially neighboring Prague and Krakow) a valuable example of how tourism and cultural display could make the reconstruction of the old Jewish quarter a flourishing and economically profitable undertaking. The impassioned study by Anna Perczel describes this scandalous situation, and calls attention to the need for rapid action to stop this devastation, even if at the last minute, in order to protect what is still left from the depradations of real estate developers.
