Summary/Abstract: Twenty years after the fall of Communist regimes in Central Europe, one could fall prey to the conviction that the transformation of these societies was achieved. A new generation has grown up, unburdened with any direct personal Communist experience; new institutions have been built, tailored on the Western democratic models; the Central European countries have become members of the European Union and other international organisations, which are traditionally seen as being composed of established democratic countries, respecting the rule of law.
