The Development of Understanding of Stimulation and Punishment

Summary/Abstract: The article disclose the development of understanding from XIII century till our days towards the stimulation and punishment, the changes in understanding of the importance of those methods throw the centuries in education as well as the changes in spectrum of these methods and requirements for applying those phenomenon in practice. Analyze of scientific and histotical materials disclosed: 1) The most evident changes in the development of Lithuanian education was in the level of study of stimulating methods, in the meaning of implementation to practice of these methods as well as in requirements of implementation. 2) The methods of stimulation and punishment till the XX century was discussed only on theoretical level. At the very beginning it was discussed on the Antique ground and then on the ground of Western European and Russian ideas on this point in pedagogues. The firs empirical studies appeared just few decades ago on stimulation and punishment. Those studies disclosed the peculiarities of implementation of stimulation and punishment as well as to disclose the attitude of pedagogues towards the implementation of those methods. 3) The scale of methods of stimulation and punishment was increased year after year. The amount of punishment was diminished, because the attitude towards the meaning of implementation of them was changed. Till the XIX century the physical and other punishment, which can humiliate children was recognized as very effective methods of education, but latter, till the middle of XX century, the pedagogues agued an even denounce such kind of punishment and proclaimed its better to stimulate the child instead of punishing. Nowadays the physical and other humiliating punishment is strictly denounced. Bu parents still are using them while educating their children. 4) The requirements in implementation of stimulation and punishment were increased year after year. While at the very beginning the teachers was tough to implement those methods moderately, to punish child deservedly, without anger, few decades latter they was thought to punish child in time and in the right place, do no apply the collective punishment. Nowadays the attention is paid towards the taking account towards child's personality and the condemn of the bad behavior but no the hole child.
