Summary/Abstract: The signing of the Common Program of the French Socialist Party and the French Communist Party in 1972 was based on the beleif of both sides that they can offer alternative and new perspectives to the crisis stricken French society. They were wrong. The failure of the Common Program can be attributed to the fact that all along of the period of their common government they competed for a total influence on the French left on the one hand and on the other a new paradoxical phenomenon emerged namely the notion of progress and development were parts of the conservative politics of that time. The French Socialist Party by becoming "the faithful housekeeper" of capitalism could offer valid solution and survive meanwhile the French Communist Party locked itself in an ideological fortress and was drifted on the brink of extinction.
