Summary/Abstract: In natural languages several words and expressions are used for notions never defined exactly. Definitions of explanatory dictionaries later verify the everyday usage of these words and expressions. Many of them, however, never get into explanatory dictionaries, because of two reasons: either they are technical terms, or before they would be included in those dictionaries, they are dropped. There are, nevertheless, undefined expressions occurring rather frequently in the daily news and in professional literature as well, with the hope that they are understandable without definition. Three of these expressions are information society, knowledge society and knowledge- based society. The paper flashes some arguments showing that such non-defined terms cannot be given any precise, restricted meaning – neither by average native speakers nor by linguists.
