Summary/Abstract: The current study aims at approaching the issues of the origin, evolution and usage of the term “socialist legislation” in the context of Romanian mass political repression at the end of the 1940s and beginning of the 1950s. The first section provides an analysis of the different meanings the term acquired in the Soviet Union between the Revolution of 1917 and until the mid-1950s. A second stage of the analysis approaches the way in which this concept was understood and applied by the political factions and institutions involved in the phenomenon of political repression in Romania, during the first decade of “popular democracy”, as well as the role played by the concept in the institutional repressive system.
