Summary/Abstract: The article presents the medieval history of the Augustinian Monastery in Bardejov on the basis of the research conducted in the archive of the Augustinian Order in Rome and in the Municipal Archive of Bardejov. The origins of this monastery date back to the second half of the 14th century and the first priors there were Cracowian Augustinians. One of them, Isaac Boner, the prior in Bardejov since 1428, was one of the well-known intellectuals who was surrounded with a halo of holiness. Since the mid-15th century the Bardejov convent became independent and the priors were Hungarians. In the mid-1460s the construction of a new monastery started, which was supported by the rich citizens of the city of Bardejov (the family of Mager among them). The most generous bequest to the church was left by Dorotea, a widow who was married to a well-known citizen of Bardejov, Anthony Schwarz Reich. The monastery was also supported by the city authorities. In the late 15th century the Augustinian monastery of Bardejov experienced moral laxity and some monks started to lead a life vitiosam et denigratam. This must have caused the visit of Martin, the prior of the Augustinian province of Hungary, who came to the monastery in 1505. His visit was also an occasion to open new monastery cells for use, which took place in the same year. In the early 16th century the new chapel of the Holy Cross was built, financed by Dorotea Reich’s donation. In 1527 there was a little dispute with the Augustinian convent in Cracow over two golden dalmatics worth 16 florins which were given to the prior of Bardejov in the Cracow convent. In return, the prior promised to deliver money or wine to the Augustinians of Cracow. Unfortunately, he did not keep his promise. In 1528 the monks left the monastery and their possessions became the property of the city.
