Summary/Abstract: The article is an analysis of the most prominent trends related to development of primary school teacher training in Lithuania at different historical periods. More comprehensive teacher-training related research indicates that the Lithuanian experience in this field has often been equal or even more accelerated than the practice of Western European countries. It is important to mention that primary school teacher training oriented towards practical teaching ceased to satisfy national educational needs as early as in the first half of the 20th century. In order to achieve a closer integration between scientific and educational practices as well as to strengthen the level of specialised vocational and general cultural sophistication of teachers, teacher training was transferred to a scientific institute in the second decade of the Lithuanian independence period. As contemporary development of primary school teacher education is once again attempted to be turned in the direction of practical training, it is expected to be a regression in the historical perspective
