Summary/Abstract: At the time of the most profound world economic crisis since the Great Depression, it might be the appropriate time to reconsider the effects of direct foreign investments on the host countries around the globe. From an East Central European perspective, this question cannot be more relevant... At the centre of this analysis is a summary of research findings about the long-term effects of the penetration of the host countries by multinational corporations (MNCs). This is not to say, as simple-minded populists or nationalists might maintain that investment by multinational corporations is intrinsically harmful. MNC penetration measures the weight that cumulated foreign capital investments have in the host countries, i.e. the percentages of the cumulated stocks of multinational corporation investments per total host country GDP. Or to put it more bluntly, it measures the relative power of the ‘multinationals’ over their host countries.
