Summary/Abstract: This essay is an analysis of the image of Constantinople – „the city of the world”, the city where Dimitrie Cantemir studied and lived in his youth for 22 years, as refl ected in a wide recollection in The System of the Mohammedan Religion, a paper he published in Russia at the end of his life (1722). The mainly visual trait of the city emerges from the vivid memories of the author focusing on relevant moments and symbols (the nocturnal illumination during Ramadan, the splendor of the interior decorations in Hagia Sofi a, the Sufi whirling, etc.), that are subject to comparison with sequences from the travel log Rapid Constantinopol-Bioram, edited by Camil Petrescu in 1933
