Summary/Abstract: Dif? cult economic situation in Yugoslavia destabilized the Yugoslav labour market in the 1960s, thus forcing thousands of Yugoslavs to leave their country searching for jobs and higher standard of living. The mass migration from Yugoslavia started in the ? rst half of the 1960s. The vast majority of the Yugoslav migrant workers settled in the German-speaking countries. According to the Austrian census from 1981 there were more than 125,000 Yugoslav citizens in Austria. In the early 1970s Yugoslav migrant workers represented more than 75% of the total number of foreign employees in Austria, while in the late 1980s this percentage was around 50%. The mass migration of Yugoslav citizens to Austria strongly in” uenced not only the lives of emigrants and their families but also the economic relations between Yugoslavia and Austria. Yugoslavia pro? ted particularly from remittances of Yugoslav citizens in Austria, which played a crucial role in reducing the consequences of Yugoslav trade de? cit with Austria.
