Summary/Abstract: Population ageing is a demographic phenomenon described as one with dual character – increase in number and percentage of older people is accompanied by very rapid increase in numbers of people aged 80 and more. The article is to present reasons, progress, and long-term consequences of the increase in numbers of the oldest old in Poland. Special attention will be paid to presentation basic socio-demographic characteristics of the subpopulation – with focus on centenarians – due to specificity of needs of the population under study.
