Summary/Abstract: The text is an attempt to present contemporary name-building tendencies in the area of zoonymy (on the language material taken from the forum for dog lovers). A variety of naming motivations and productivity of animal names prove a big creative potential of this onomastic category. Differentiating the most important oppositional sources of nomination accentuates the influence of many social and cultural factors on the act of naming. Basic contrast name groups prove similarities when creating names, as well as a variety of names in this area. It is also connected with the role and status of a pet in its owner’s life, with an emphasis put on the bond between them (expressed among others by the functioning of anthroponyms as zoonyms). The analysis of the material in the context of the thematic forum increases a hypocrystic nature of animals names. A description of the name origin, taking into account its semantics and an extended field of variant forms of a zoonym convince of the development of zoonymy as a separate area of onomastics.
