Summary/Abstract: Children’s safety on open and closed waters is very important both for individuals and for the whole community. Drowning as a phenomenon requires a high level of one’s being aware of the need to preserve one’s safety in and around water. Factors that affect the safety of children need to be identified in order for preventive measures to be taken. If we consider the profiles of potential drowning victims, the following risk factors occur: gender, age, ethnicity, occupation, and level of educa-tion. As regards the potential places of drowning, the risk factors are various water bodies in the surrounding: swimming pools (public or private), canals, rivers, ponds, lakes, and seas. Other important factors are the activities during which drowning may occur: recreational activities, professional activities, and other activities, such as mur-ders, suicides, or traffic accidents. Potential risks also include inebriation and adult supervision from parents, legal guardians, brothers, and sisters (who are at the public bathing place or the swimming pool with a small child). There is also a significant number of drowning cases that occur without being registered or statistically processed.
