Summary/Abstract: Vienna’s religious policy in Transylvania represents an essential chapter in the understanding of the religious Transylvanian context at the middle of the eighteenth century, of the evolution and final purposes of the anti-unionist (anti-catholic) movements, which were ended with Sofronie’s riot. Vienna’s religious policy represented an ample phenomenon, which embodied different elements such as: the awareness for the dynastic fidelity, the political vision of the union, the political dogma of the union as a whole, the tolerance, the social perception of the anti-unionist riots etc. In the end, this policy was forced toward adopting a different direction, one that would admit an undeniable reality: the existence of two religious confessions of Romanians in Transylvania. This fact played an important part in Vienna’s further decisions, which had to take into consideration the new confessional reality of the Transylvanians and to accommodate itself to more realistic concessions that favoured the Orthodox Christians. In this study we would like to take into consideration a short analysis of the mechanism of this policy regarding its components and the main directions of its evolution.
