Ethical Virtues of Individual and Collective Guilt and Shame

Summary/Abstract: This article compare the feelings of shame and guilt as components of self-centered emotions or moral emotions, and highlights the differences between the two, mechanisms that trigger and possible effects on individual and collective motivations and behaviors. Theoretical and practical conclusions arising from this analysis question the common sense postulates concerning their ethical protective role and establish the hierarchy of these emotions in relation to moral behavior.
