Recent Trends and Patters of Youth Transition from Education to Employment in Europe

Summary/Abstract: The article addressed the topic of youth unemployment in Europe, from two perspectives – increased participation in tertiary education and the school-to-work transition. Data extracted mainly from the on-line database of Eurostat (especially LSF results) was used to analyze the European trends in youth employment, youth participation in tertiary education and transition from education to employment, in the last decade. For some of the items, a comparison with Romania’s situation is also provided. The results indicate that, even if, in the last couple of years, the increasing participation in tertiary education did not positively influence the annual average employment rate for the age group 15-24, still, tertiary education graduates are among the “best protected” against inactivity and unemployment, with rates considerably lower than the general average. In the closing section, the article presents a general approach that could be used in addressing the challenges raised by youth employment – that is a stronger collaboration between academic researchers and policy makers.
