Summary/Abstract: Child abandonment was and remains an issue in our country and not only. Understanding this problem as a social phenomenon and its integrated approach represents a central concern of decision makers at central and local level. This paper aims to refer to one of the special protection measures for abandoned children, namely placement in residential type services (Law 272/2004). The idea from which we started was to capture how institutional environment leaves its mark on the development of children/youth, on their future prospects and consequently on their subsequent social and professional integration. The study consisted in the achievement semi-structured interviews with young people who have been or are institutionalized in residential institutions. Qualitative research reveals the interviewees’ opinion on life in institutions, life skills development, problems after leaving residential units, relationship with natural family, attitude towards their own family, education level and social and professional integration, future plans, the main needs and support resources.
